Me and my girl and boy, raising awareness and acceptance of autism

Monday 23rd April

St George’s Day! Here is guinea pig George, we didn’t give him a card – he’d have eaten it!

D didn’t go in well to school this morning, lots of anxieties around leaving Bunny in the pigeonhole and the child who picks on her. Took her teacher plus a TA to get her into the classroom.

She came out of school in much the same vein – very solemn, very pale. She didn’t say much on the way home and had a MASSIVE meltdown as soon as we got home – guess she saved it up. Fortunately T got out of the way quickly, she was very cuddly afterwards.

I tried to talk to her at bathtime about her day and D’s answer was to shout (a lot) that the work was too hard and she didn’t want to go to school anymore. When I said that I’d be in trouble and that her teacher would be knocking on the door to tell me off if she didn’t go in, D said “well, don’t answer it then!” (logic for you)

The grump continued all through the rest of bathtime and the rest of the evening routine. Cuddles and make-up before sleep time though (thank goodness for Melatonin).

If you haven’t seen it, please take a look at my earlier post today, entitled “Injustice…”.

  1. Jeanette I hope you don’t mind me asking as I’m new to your blog and you may have mentioned this before but why won’t they let D have Bunny in class? I’m a SENCO in main stream primary and work with a wide spectrum of pupils with SEN.

    • No problem, ask away! I think it’s a combination of strict teacher and not wanting to encourage the other children to bring in toys. Bunny stays in her pigeon-hole all day, unfortunately. Bunny is her coping mechanism. D does have a different teacher Thursday & Friday who is more lenient.

  2. St. George is GORGEOUS! So sorry to hear school is sucking! Keep me posted! Light and Love to you all! My hamster Charlotte, says Hallo to George!

    • Aww, thank you. Hoping for a better day tomorrow…. We have 3 piggies – George, Bungle & Zippy after an English children’s programme called “Rainbow” and they definitely are piggies!!

  3. Is this mainstream? Think you mentioned Specialist though not sure. It just seems odd to me that this one small thing which is so important to D can’t be managed in the class to support her anxiety – I do wonder at my own profession sometimes.

    • It’s a Special Needs school, D’s been there just over 2 years. Her anxieties have increased since Christmas & we’ve started the referral to CAMHS process (albeit with 3 months lost – see my “feeling absolutely failed” post last Monday). Roll on parents evening!

      • Thank you Janette.
I hope CAMHS can help. Everything takes so long I know. You are doing a great job to raise awareness and support others.
